Cultural Exchange 2: Ireland to Zambia - June 2023
Music and Animation Camp in Zambia
The next cultural exchange was planned around the Curriculum Development Workshop organised for June 2023. It was decided that a group of 4 students from BCFE (2 graduates from the Degree in Animation, 1 graduate from the HND in Music Production, and 1 graduate from the HNC in Music Performance) would accompany a team of BCFE teachers to Zambia. Upon arriving in Lusaka the BCFE team flew to Livingstone to perform at ‘Limpos Pub & Grill’ music venue. The BCFE music students performed by themselves and also performed with the venue's house band.
The overarching goal of the trip was to continue working towards the development of the Diplomas in Animation and Music Performance. The Job Profile Workshop was successfully completed during the visit by BCFE to Lusaka in February 2023. The next step was to complete the Curriculum Development Workshop where the details of each Diplomas curriculum would be discussed/debated and formally agreed. The Curriculum Development Workshop was held at Mika Convention Centre on Wednesday 28th June and had 28 invited participants including BCFE staff, EHC staff, EHC management, TEVETA curriculum experts, TEVETA senior managers and sector experts from fields related to each Diploma.
Ahead of the Curriculum Development Workshop the BCFE teachers facilitated a collaborative Creative Camp for the BCFE and AMT/CDM EHC students. The creative camp involved a music camp and an animation camp which began on Monday 26th June and ran through to Thursday 29th June at 3pm. The camps were set up by BCFE and EHC staff but were driven by the participating students from both colleges.
The Animation students from BCFE worked with EHC students from the Diploma in Creative Digital Media. They chose a mural image that was on the wall of EHC as a source image to work with and animate over the course of the camp. The music students split into 2 groups made up of BCFE and EHC music students with each group composing and producing original music.
The camp was a resounding success and the animation students combined the original compositions from the music camp with their animation.
The outcomes of the camps were showcased at EHC and also at the Irish Embassy on Thursday 29th June. The camps were the first time students from EHC and BCFE collaborated in person on creative projects. During the camp Denise Moylan also facilitated participation in an international workshop on the animation/games software ‘Unreal’.
